Ilha do Sal
"....The island looks like Mars... but on Mars the experts believe life is possible...",once said as a joke in an airplane
descending on the Isle of Sal.
There may not be much green on the island, but the Jurassic Park scenery with its volcanos rising out of the desert, rough lava coastlines and sandy white beaches stretching out for miles gives the island a beauty of its own... so unique that you might fall in love...
The island is approximately 30 kilometres long and 12 kilometres wide. On average you will only spend between 15-20 minutes travelling from the airport to your destination. Additionally, all 4 kite spots are within a 3 kilometre range of each other. Espargos is the main city but you will probably not spend much time there.
The tourism, kitesurfing, and most of the nightlife happens in Santa Maria, in the south of the island.
Santa Maria is a friendy village with a nice picturesque center, fishing peer, a long white pure sandy beaches along which most of the large hotels are located. With warm waters, great beachs there is plenty to do as a tourist or non-kite surfer. The Santa Maria nights are long and full of life with a lot of restaurants, a cinema and discotheques which close only early in the morning.
It is possible to rent an apartment or small house directly on the beach for those who prefer some space and cooking facilities.
In St. Maria village there are two main spots for kitesurfing, Albatros and along the large hotels. Check the spots guide for details.
